You need to be careful not to take off too much wood, but sanding the exterior of curved-sided bowls with this technique can be a big time-saver.

A scroll saw is a real tool
At the community woodshop where I used to do my work, as well as in some woodworking magazines, scroll saws are not considered "real tools". As I began to explore the potential of the saw, I realized that I could achieve many of the effects obtained with those "real" tools, and with much greater safety.
Scrolling is fun and easy to learn
So is cake decorating
